I had gentoo on this laptop before I lost the drive.  Kubuntu is really 
nicely done.  Like you, I'm not a fan of gnome -- polished or 
otherwise.  Kubuntu is now part of the overall ubuntu project so it's 
not really a separate distro anymore.

If you were relatively comfy with debian, you'll like kubuntu.
