You've guessed the terminology perfectly!

I had written up a guide on setting up Ubuntu Linux on LVM on a Software
RAID 1 here:

Unfortunately, I had missed on setting up the /boot partition separately. 
At some point, I had planned on going back and redoing some of the
screenshots, but I haven't had a chance to do so yet.

At the very least, there should be some links early on in that how-to on
LVM and the Software Raid.
