That's a good question. Unfortunately, a lot of times you just have to
know. But, there are good resources on the Internet, although I don't
have any URLs handy. Also, keep in mind that 'man' can help you dig
through documentation based on keywords. For example, I may want to
know everything that has the term "resolution" in it:
$ man -k resolution
clock_getres (2) - Get the resolution of any clock
gimpprint-resolutions (7) - Gimp-Print print resolutions
