Phil, John is absolutely correct. You are welcome to join up with the BRLUG
Newbies/Cajun Clickers Computer Club Linux Desktop Special Interest Group.
Membership in the Cajun Clickers Computer Club is not required although it is
encouraged.
We meet the 1st and 3rd Monday of the month at 6 pm in the Cajun Clickers
Computer Club computer lab. Where practical, the workshops are hands on using
the lab computers which dual boot with Windows XP and Xandros Linux Version 4
Open Circulation Edition. If you have a laptop, you are encouraged to bring
it and us it for the workshops as we usually have a capacity crowd.

The Cajun Clickers Computer Club Linux Desktop SIG Wiki can be found here:
http://cccclinuxsig.pbwiki.com/
The mission of this group is to help the Windows refugee migrate to Linux. The
workshops are facilitated by desktop users, for desktop users. Whenever
possible the workshops are "hands on" and EVERYTHING is "Point 'N' Click".
Contrary to popular belief, there are VERY few tasks in Linux, including the
installation and configuration, that can not be done with a few mouse clicks
and the number that can not be done "Point 'N' Click" are decreasing almost
daily. The workshops are currently facilitated by Will Hill, Joe Zachary and
myself with the hopes of recruiting other members to facilitarte various
workshops, in particular those that have to do with using specific open
source programs like Open Office, Blender, Audacity, Firefox, The Gimp, Nvu,
etc. We focus specifically on USING Linux rather than administering and
managing Linux. In fact, with the exception of Will, the rest of us have VERY
limited knowledge of the command line, and none of us are "Linux
Professionals".

The next workshop will be an InstallFest on Monday, February 5th at 6 PM in
the Clickers computer lab. If you would like to have us help you install
Linux on your computer, bring just "the box", monitor, keyboard and mouse are
not needed, and we can set you up. If you wish to dual boot with any version
of Windows through XP, we can help you do that as well. If your machine has a
DVD-ROM drive, we will help you install Xandros Linux version 4.1 Open
Circulation Edition. If you have only a CD-ROM, then we will help you install
Xandros Linux version 3.0.2 Open Circulation Edition. Version 4.1 is the
latest and is what we run in the computer lab, but is only available as a DVD
download. If you wish to install a different version of Linux, then please
download the desired ISO through
http://distrowatch.com
burn the ISO to the appropriate media, bring it with you, and we will help you
get it installed.
We have standardized on Xandros Linux because it is, in our opinion, the
easiest version of Linux for a Windows refugee to migrate to, as it was
designed from the ground up with the Windows refugee as its target market,
but there are many other fine desktop Linux distrbutions available if you
wish to use a different one.
If you wish to dual boot with Windows, prior to the workshop, please boot the
machine into safe mode and run both scandisk and defrag. If you have the
time, run them twice. It is also recommended that you back up your Windows
installation. If you need help with this, we can also provide that help, but
please let us know at the very beginning of the workshop, as this requires
additional time.
Again, welcome aboard and I look forward to seeing you on the 5th.
Ed Richards
John,
You and the other BRLUGgers are welcome to come by and see what we are doing
any time that you want.
