Strange that you wouldn't get anything out of a dd, even if it was in a 
different format.
I've heard that what happens sometimes is an older tape drive will get 
out of alignment. When this happens, the drive can still read and write 
backups to its own tapes, but when you go to read them in a different, 
but supposedly compatible drive, they won't read. If you can try the 
original tape drive, you may get better results. Don't know if that's 
the case for you, but if it's possible, it might be worth a try.
