If you don't know what to do with it, then def. use LVM. So, I'd do
this:

1. Insert drive
2. fdisk as LVM
3. pvcreate /dev/sdX
4. vgcreate VolGroupXX /dev/sdX
5. lvcreate -n MyVolXX VolGroupXX -L 100GB
6. mkfs.ext3 /dev/VolGroupXX/MyVolXX
7. mount /dev/VolGroupXX/MyVolXX /home/shared
