You are confused because you and other on this list have set up strawmen for
me. You said that I would mandate free software. I said that people should
be made to bear the true cost of their software. I have argued for the right
to use purchased bandwith as suits the user. I've also argued that the
public owns networks that have been and are protected from real competition.
You and others have accused me of arrogance, ignorance and entitlement.
Unless you can see the simple issue for what it is, you will be confused:
You should be able to do what you want with the bandwith you pay for. Port
blocks and other monkey business reduce network efficiency and freedom. They
are contrary to the original design of the internet and an outrage to the
public.
It IS a good idea for governments to favor free software. It's wrong for
government to endorse private vendors, especially one as bad as Microsoft.
Everytime a public employee uses Word to share or archive information,
everytime a public website is Windows only, a large percentage of the
population is unserved. Purchasing non free software when perfectly adequate
free software is available is wasteful. The money is always better spent on
what government is supposed to be doing.
