Thanks both of those things are nice.

1. is very nice sounding.  I'm going to look into what Debian has.  What 
packages do you install to make it work under Ubuntu?

2. now that you make me look, I see something I overlooked last time.  This is 
an Asus BTC-201 with subnumbers 942-0 and E220370.  The nasty thing might 
work afterall.  

With a little tweaking, the TV Wonder is playing nice.  It records TV at 
640x480 and DVDs at 720x405, which is acceptable quality.  Yeah, I know, I 
should figure out DeCSS.
