Here's a nice article on how to make a USB drive into an encrypted "liveCD"

It looks easy enough and might be a good way to travel.  Personal and company 
data can be kept on the USB disk while your laptop runs a clean install 
without sensitive information.  USB drives of sufficient size are cheap and 
you won't have to worry about the TSA or others snatching your laptop this 
way.  Lost or stolen USB sticks won't give up your data easily.
