Ron,

Excellent article and very appropriate to this list. Thanks for posting it. In general, i agree with most of the comments made by the author. He wrote: "While solutions may exist to almost every problem I encountered, I was willing to invest only a limited amount of time as a system administrator." This is a very true statement that solutions do exist to the problems that he encountered, most of which link directly to closed source companies creating file formats that are not compatible across all operating systems and/or digital rights management. We will be addressing the ways to solve these problems in future LinuxSIG workshops.

He also wrote: "Claims by some Linux publishers that anybody can easily switch to Linux from Windows seem totally oversold." I also have to agree with this statement in that there are still some vertical applications like AutoCad, MicroStation, probably some high end accounting, tax preparation software, etc., for which no Linux equivalent package exists, YET, yet being the operative word. So, I think that saying that anybody or everybody can easily swich is a bit of a reach, but without question, MOST can easily switch to Linix from Windows.

His closing statement: "Meantime, I'll continue to toy with Xandros, and look at upgrades of other distributions to see if I can overcome the hurdles. In exchange for a reasonable amount of time, I'd jump at the chance to gain the speed, security and savings promised by Linux -- and to feel that Microsoft has a bit more competition."

Thanks again for an excellent article.

Ed
