Hello, Donald
The default Fedora Core 6 installer does give the option to choose
packages based on intended use of your system, customized groups of
packages, or even customizing the individual packages to install. It's
possible that the CDs you used that came with a book were customized to
not give you the choices, but that would be strange.

In any event, you can manage the packages that are installed on your
system by clicking on 'Add/Remote Software' in the Applications menu.
Packages are organized in groups, so you can drill down and make choices
about what to keep or remove, and there's a description of each package
when you click on it. The tool also gives you the ability to search for
new or updated packages from online repositories so you can add software
to your system.

If you have any more troubles, please post them here!
-Tim
