Jerry,
I've been running linux distros since Slackware and TAMU came on 40+
floppy disks, in 1991. I may still have a set - that took the better part
of a week to download, write to floppy and label with nice laser printed
labels.
Today at work we use RHES on servers, and CentOS for desktops. It's funny
you ask this question today, as I open a DVD of Oracle Unbreakable Linux.
I'm installing to a VM as I write this.
I run Fedora at home, but my experiences are totally different from mosts.
At home I run Windows XP as my desktop, and I have two Linux machines on
the network I "telnet" into for most of my real work. I'm an old-time
command line user. For me as long as the command-line tools are there
(and have been for nearly 30 years, with minor changes), I'm happy. And
for that any distro is ok.
Which distro? I find it mostly depends on your needs. For a hobbyist,
with no Unix experience... I'd suggest one of the new flavors with their
cool graphical interfaces - Ubuntu, Turbo, etc. For someone with a good
hand at Unix and familiar with the tools, Fedora, and CentOS.
If you putting together a machine to make money? I'd recommend RedHat or
Oracle Unbreakable. They offer technical support, and when the boss is
breathing down your neck, it's worth it.
My Favorite - NST 1.4, I keep one in my car for, uhm, whatever.
