Greetings all,
The next Linux Desktop SIG workshop will be at 6 PM on Monday, December 3rd in the Linux Lab. Many of you have asked about how to create backups (images) of your Linux installations. In the upcoming workshop, we will look at two methods of doing this. One is unique, at least to the best of my knowledge, to PCLinuxOS and is called "remasterme", which is installed by default on PCLinuxOS. The other is a general imaging method using Mondo/Mindi that will image any Linux installation as well as the Windows partition, if you are dual booting Linux and Windows. From the Mondo home page, (http://mondorescue.org) "Mondo Rescue is a GPL (General Public License) disaster recovery solution. It supports Linux (i386, x86_64, ia64) and FreeBSD (i386). It's packaged for multiple distributions (RedHat, RHEL, SuSE, SLES, Mandriva, Debian, Gentoo, Xandros, PCLinuxOS). It supports tapes, disks, network and CD/DVD as backup media, multiple filesystems, LVM, software and hardware Raid."
Do some finger muscle warm up exercises beforehand because we will be doing a lot of pointing and clicking. Those that will be bringing their own computers, laptop or desktop, Xandros or PCLinuxOS, please install Mondo and Mindi before coming to the workshop to avoid the bandwith limitation of doing so over the club internet connection. Both are available from the respective distribution repositories. In this workshop, you will not only learn how to create an image of your system, but will also get some practice with using the Linux file system and hopefully a more indepth understanding of it.
As always, those that have laptops are encouraged to bring and use them to allow others to use the lab computers. Finally, those members that wish to use their own machines for the exercises are encouraged to bring them as well.
See everyone Monday evening,
Ed
