Greetings all,

The next Linux Desktop SIG workshop will be held on Monday, October 15th at 6
PM in the Cajun Clickers Computer Club Linux Lab. We will start off this
workshop by talking about the Linux File System Hierarchy. We will
investigate what goes where and why. and how the Linux file system relates to
the Microsoft Windows file system. The Linux File System Hierarchy is
detailed in a 113 page document that can be found at:

http://tldp.org/LDP/Linux-Filesystem-Hierarchy/

if you are interested in doing some self study before the workshop. This
workshop will be a very high level overview of the file system. I will try
and concentrate on those things that I think the SIG membership will find
particularly useful. If you have specific questions that you would like
answered concerning the file system, post them on the Linux SIG mail list and
I will do my best to answer them for you, within the time that I have
available between now and Monday evening. If we have some time available
after talking about this, I will do a bit more in depth demonstration of
DeVeDe, the Linux program that takes almost any video file format and
converts it to a DVD playable on any DVD player.

Update on the Linux Lab:

This past Friday and Saturday we had a group of around 6 people that came in
to help with getting the lab set up. We now have 7 machines, including the
instructors machine that are dual booting Xandros and PCLinuxOS. The rest of
the machines are booting either Xandros or PCLinuxOS, but not both. Of the
machines that we have, 3 or 4 of them are pretty slow, but the rest seem to
perform between good to quite snappy.

Anyone that wishes to bring in their personal Linux machine, desktop or
laptop, are more than welcome to do so, rather than use a lab machine. We do
ask that if you bring in your desktop machine that you set it up at the
location of one of the slower lab machines, rather than disabling one of the
higher performance computers. If in doubt, check with one of the SIG
facilitators.

We will also have two tables along the left wall of the Lab is being set aside
for SIG members that choose to bring in their laptops and wireless
connectivity is available.

Once again I plan to be at the club Friday afternoon around 2 PM to continue
working on getting everything set up. I am on the radio show Saturday
morning, so I will not get to the club till sometime after probably 10:30
Saturday morning, but anyone that is wanting to work is free to get there
earlier and start without me. The machines that are already complete have a
post it note on them indicating such, except for the machine in the far left
corner of the lab, which is also finished. Just in case the post-it notes
have fallen off, all 4 machines on the front row in front of the instructors
machine and one of the two middle machines on the second row are dual
booting. The two end machines on the back row have some hardware issues and
need to be looked into. The left end machine on the middle row was having
issues but I think the Hardware SIG guys got it working. Thanks Ed Walker,
Russ and rest of the Hardware SIG folks.

I think that about covers everything for the moment. See everyone Monday
evening and I promise that this workshop will not be chaotic like the past
one. We will be putting some "work" into workshop. Thanks for everyone's
patience while we get the lab up and running and for all the help from the
SIG membership.

Ed
