It sounds like you're taking the external drive out of its case and
putting it inside your computer, right? You may need to check the
jumper settings on the drive.
You'll probably want it to be set as Master, or Cable Select. Master
would probably be better. Also, i assume you will be reinstalling the
OS of your choice on your the new drive.
The install will make the drive bootable.
