So, is this correct?
1) This hard drive that you have placed inside of your computer has backups
of your files
2) You would like to put a distro on this hard drive so you can use this
harddrive to run your os.
3) You would like to access the files you have on there in the new distro
you place on there.
Are we on the same page?
If so.
To be safe, you need to backup this harddrive, some how, before you try
installing this new hard drive. (even if that means getting a friend to come
over with a spare hdd and a laptop...
If you have files on it, you have some sort of disk formatting. If you are
lucky the HDD is already partitioned. If it is partitioned, and it has space
to install the OS and has space for a SWAP partition, you could probably
skip the Backup step (though i don't recomend it)
You could use a LIVE CD to access this hard drive (and back things up), or
to see if you have available partitions for the hard drive.
I am writing this hastily, so please pardon the scatter brained answer.
