Greetings all,
The next workshop of the Linux Desktop SIG will be Monday evening, November
5th at 6 PM in the Linux Lab. In this workshop we will start out by doing
some hands on exercises regarding the Linux File System as a continuation of
the previous workshop. If you have a USB thumb drive, bring it with you and
we will experiment with mounting it to different mount points and learn hands
on how some of this stuff works.
Next I will do a demonstration (finally) of how to use DeVeDe, the sweet Linux
program that lets you take pretty much ANY video file and create a DVD that
is playable on both your computer and your set top DVD player. This exercise
will lead into the opportunity to preview the first of several GIMP (Gnu
Image Manipulation Program) Tutorial DVD's that I have put together, and,
pending board approval, will be available for purchase, or, if you wish, you
can download the tutorials yourself and create your own DVD's.
Finally, if we have network connectivity, we are going to try and get all of
the lab computers communicating with each other so that we can share files
across the network.
Those that have laptops are encouraged to bring and use them to allow others
to use the lab computers. We had a total of around 30 people at the last
workshop so workstations are at a premium. Finally, those members that wish
to use their own machines for the exercises are encouraged to bring them as
well.
See everyone Monday evening
Ed
PS: Happy Halloween too!
