Hi Walter and the multitude,
We are pleased to announce that the club Board Of Directors has authorized the
establishment of a Linux Lab to operate concurrently with the present Windows
Lab. It will initially be made up of about 16 machines, all networked to a
central file server. The lab will be set up in what is now Lecture Room #2.
It will be a multi-purpose facility available for use by any and all club
members. When not being used for Linux SIG workshops, it will be available
for any other club activities. The Linux Lab computers will all be running
Linux in several different incarnations, and each installation will have an
extensive collection of software installed, including such programs as
OpenOffice, Firefox, Opera, The Gimp, Inkscap, Blender, Audacity, Picasa,
Google Earth, and many others familiar to most club members. Club instructors
are invited and encouraged to use the Linux Lab for workshops where they feel
its use would be appropriate, both for workshops and lectures. For those
instructors not familiar with using Linux, we can do a quick crash course
that will get you up an running. i think you will be pleasantly surprised at
how easy and intuitive using Linux has become.
This coming Saturday, September 22nd, will be the first of two work days set
aside to get the Linux Lab set up. We will meet at the club at 9 am to begin
setting up the computers and the file server, arranging furniture,
establishing and installing the network and in general getting the
infrastructure in place. Any and all club members that are interested in
helping are cordually invited to come and help us out. Bring your power
drill, electric screw driver, etc.
The following Saturday, September 29th, we will be doing the actual
installation of the Linux Operating Systems, setting up the Server and in
general checking things out. Again, any and all club members are invited and
encouraged to come out and help.
Finally, if anyone has an old DVD-ROM or DVD-RW drive laying around that you
are not using and need a tax deduction, please feel free to make such a
donation. We need as many of those as we can get our hands on. The same also
goes for office chairs similar to those presently in the Windows Computer
Lab. Initially, we will be using folding chairs like those in the lecture
rooms so better chairs will be, well, better. :)
After the lab is up and running, we plan to have an open house for the club
membership to inaugurate it and let the membership see what we have been
doing for the last 3 years. Additionally, we plan to have more Linux Day Open
Houses, several times per year, to introduce Linux to the general public, as
well as bring new members into the club.
I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the general club
membership, the club officers, chairpersons and board of directors for the
support that they have given to this effort and to the establishment and
continued growth of the Linux Desktop Special Interest Group.
Robin, per our conversation on Monday evening, September 10th, can you please
move the two events scheduled for this coming Saturday in Lecture Room 2 to
Lecture Room 1, which is currently unused, and add the Linux Lab work days to
the schedule.
Thanks again to all and we look forward to lots of great things with the Linux
Desktop Special Interest Group and the new Linux Lab.
