I just bought a new hp scanner (without doing any research).  I thought most any hp would work.  I got a Scanjet G3110 for scanning slides and photos.

I tried everything I could think of to do, but I can't get the computer to see the scanner.  I looked at the /etc/scan.d/conf files and tried to enter my scanner in them but this hasn't helped.

Does any have and ideas they would be willing to share.

I'm using Mepis 7.0.  I'm using sane.  I type xscanimage into the command line and I check the processes running and it shows xscanimage is running.  Nothing comes up on my screen.  The scanner connects through usb.  Usually when I hook something to a usb  port I get something on the screen showing something is hooked up, but this doesn't show anything is hooked up.

I was sitting here trying to edit some pictures and the thought occurred to me there must be a way to check the usb connections, so I logged on as root and typed lsusb and got this:

Bus 001 Device 002: ID 03f0:4305 Hewlett-Packard 
so the computer is detecting the scanner and  I think its just a matter of making the software work with it.

I'm no scanner pro. Actually, I don't even use the HP scanner we have at
work, and we have the Windows software for it installed. Did you read a
HOWTO on this and see if there are any troubleshooting tips?

have patience, Ubuntu only just added support for the G3010 with the latest release 8.10.
you could have support for the G3110 soon.
to speed up the process, send info about your unsupported scanner to SANE at:
http://www.sane-project.org/contrib.html
until then you may have to use windows in its own partition or virtualbox.

I just bought a new hp scanner (without doing any research).  I thought most any

see the scanner.  I looked at the /etc/scan.d/conf files and tried to enter my
scanner in them but this hasn't helped.

Does any have and ideas they would be willing to share.
