Greetings all,
The next Linux Desktop SIG Workshop, which will be held on Monday February
18th at 6 PM in the Linux Lab, will be an InstallFest where we will help new
users install Linux on their computers. Since so many folks at the monthly
meeting took or asked for Linux Live CD's, I am also sending this message to
the General list.
If you are interested in installing Linux on your computer, bring just the
computer proper to the InstallFest. We don't need your monitor, keyboard,
mouse or any other peripheral devices. If you picked up a copy of PCLinuxOS
or Xandros at the meeting and that is what you want to install, bring it with
you too. If you want to install a different version of Linux, then please go
to http://distrowatch.org, find and download the ISO of the version that you
desire, burn it to a CD or DVD as may be appropriate and bring it with you.
For those that want Xandros or PCLinuxOS, I will have copies available.
Prior to coming to the InstallFest, please run both the error checking routine
and defragment the drive that you want to install Linux on, and be sure that
you have at least 5 gig of free space on the drive that you can give up for
the Linux installation.
If you currently have Windows installed on your computer and want to keep it,
we will help you install Linux so that you will get a menu when you turn your
computer on that will allow you to boot into either Windows or Linux.
If you have questions, feel free to post them to the list, or e-mail me
directly at edslinuxbox at cox.net.
If any existing Linux users need help with hardware configuration or software
installation, bring your computer and, in the case of hardware, bring the
hardware, and we will see what we can do.
Current SIG members are encouraged to come and help new members with the
installation.
I look forward to seeing lots of new Linux users Monday evening,
Ed
